Graveside Performance                                                                                                               Detail
2009
Site-specific performance with musical composition by Mario Silva
Coile Cemetery, Hull, Georgia

A gravesite was lined with six black pedestals, three on each side. Each pedestal was topped with a ten-quart galvanized bucket. During the performance, the artist created two holes in each bucket so that they appeared to weep upon the grave. Two violinists played a piece based on the common dirge, Ave Maria. The ceremony became a spectacle in which the attention was on the "mourners," suggesting that funerals are more about giving closure to the living than honoring the deceased.
