Performer, wood boxes, plaster cast and stage light
A young woman improvises on the violin inside a box. The tone of her music fluctuates between grandiose and sorrowful. Extending from her box, a plaster cast of her face is illuminated by and appears to be craning towards a stage light, which is housed in the larger, adjacent box. The resulting image is of an individual simultaneously longing for and ignoring the public gaze.
Focus was performed on opening night (Friday, December 3, 2010) of the exhibition In Position: Works by Lauren Cunningham and Terence Tirpak at the Chase Street Warehouses, Unit 4, in Athens, Georgia. To watch a clip of the performance, click here.
