LIE

Plaster and fabric

The bed is a symbol for the innocence of sleep, the sacredness of marriage, and sex and infidelity. In this relief sculpture, the word "lie" emerges from within the folds of a bedsheet. In this context, lie could refer to lying in bed, telling a lie, trying to cover up a lie, or a combination thereof. The word's obscured meaning is reflected in this sculpted image of letters partially veiled under a wrinkled fitted sheet, which is mostly relaxed and flaccid but also hints at tension where the fabric along the elastic band is itself under tension.
